Story of Bethel Crown Point

Bethel had its beginnings in the 1930s through a simple community Bible study. Meeting in Gary, Indiana, this small group grew and soon became an established church. In March of 1969 the congregation moved into a new location in Merrillville. There they experienced God’s blessings through slow and steady growth.

Thirty years later, in the summer of 1997, Bethel called its current pastor, Steve DeWitt. One year later the church property was sold, and the congregation met in Merrillville High School for a year and a half while a new building was constructed. Then, in the spring of 2000, Bethel celebrated its first worship service in a new facility on Broadway Avenue in Crown Point.

As Bethel continued to grow, the need for expansion was apparent, and in the summer of 2005, a new kids’ ministry center was completed. In 2012, the auditorium and student center were renovated to enhance sound and lighting and to capture high-quality video and sound for playback at multisite venues.

Over the years, our ministry has expanded to include additional campuses. With each new community and expression of our family, the goal remains the same: Glorify God, make disciples, and reach the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
